(Bhagya Luxmi, Intern Journalist) Sam Pitroda’s real name is Satyanarayana Gangaram Pitroda. Sam was born on 4 May 1942 in a Gujarati family in Odisha. Sam’s father worked as a carpenter. Since his father wanted him to learn Gujarati, he got his early education in Gujarat. He obtained a master’s degree in Physics and Electronics from Maharaja Sayajirao University. Also studied at Illinois Institute of Technology, USA.

  • Father of the information revolution in India:

Sam is called the father of the information revolution in India. It is believed that Sam’s hand was behind the idea of bringing a mobile phone. From 2005 to 2009, Pitroda was the Chairman of the Knowledge Commission of India. In 1984, he founded C-DOT i.e. ‘Center for Development of Telematics’ for research and development in the field of telecommunications. Impressed by his ability, Rajiv Gandhi gave him the job to guide domestic and foreign telecom policy. Sam has been Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s public information structure and innovation advisor during the UPA government.

  • Close to Rahul:


Sam Pitroda also serves as a political advisor to Congress President Rahul Gandhi. Many Congress leaders also attribute the change in Rahul’s image to Pitroda. After Rajiv Gandhi’s death, Sam said “I had lost my best friend”.

  • This is how Satyanarayana went to Sam:

After finishing his studies, Sam started working at television electric manufacturer Oak Electric. Till then, his name was Satyanarayana Pitroda. When he got his salary check, his name was written in it. When he complained in this regard, the woman who saw the work of the salary said that “your name is too long, so I changed it”. And, thus Satyanarayana became Sam Pitroda.
