(Pooja Dubey, Intern Journalist) Maruti Suzuki India, the country’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki India has no intention of developing a BS6 standard diesel engine for small cars. The company believes that such cars are not economically viable. A company official said, “now the market is slowly shifting towards petrol models.”
There are no diesel models in the line-up of Maruti Suzuki. The company now intends to expand its CNG portfolio.
MSI Executive Director Sales and Marketing Shashank Srivastava said, “There is no logic to developing a small diesel engine. It has fallen to less than five percent in the hatchback segment. Also in the sedan and entry-level SUV segment. Has decreased significantly. Economics no longer supports it. “
Srivastava said, “However, there are many consumers who ignore the cost of driving a car and will still be buying diesel cars. If there are enough buyers in that category, then we can consider developing a bigger BS6 diesel engine.”
The company currently has eight models that come with factory fitted CNG units. “We plan to increase the CNG portfolio further in the coming days,” said Srivastava.
