(Dharshini.G, Intern journalist) The awaited 277.3-km-long eight-path greenfield project would connect Salem and Chennai under the Center’s ‘Bharatmala Pariyojana’ scheme.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) told the Supreme Court on Tuesday that the ₹10,000 crores Salem-Chennai eight-path green passageway project was of “national significance” and didn’t require ecological clearance preceding land acquisition.

Showing up before a Bench led by Justice Arun Mishra, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said “there is a separate procedure” set up for the NHAI ventures. This was unique in relation to the typical acquisition process.

The court, however, chose to hear the case on August 6. Prior to this, in a court hearing, Mr. Mehta had contrasted getting ecological freedom before land acquisition with “making some strategic mistakes”.

The authority has moved the Supreme Court with a request to vacate on April 8, 2019 request for the Madras High Court, which held that earlier environmental clearance was obligatory for the project.
