(Aditya Shaw, Intern Journalist): More than a thousand people were arrested on Wednesday for violating the lockdown imposed to prevent the spread of coronavirus in West Bengal’s capital, Kolkata. A senior police official said 721 of them were booked under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code. He said that 352 people were arrested for not applying masks. The officer said that 21 people were arrested for spitting in public places. He said the police also seized 33 vehicles. The West Bengal government has decided to impose a complete lockdown twice a week by 31 August.
On Wednesday, 41 more people died from Covid-19, raising the death toll in the state to 1,490. It has been stated in the bulletin of the state health department that after the arrival of 2,294 new cases of coronavirus infection, the total number of infected in the state reached 65,258. Since Tuesday, 2,094 patients have recovered from the disease, while the number of patients undergoing treatment now stands at 19,652. A total of 17,144 samples have been examined in the last 24 hours.
