(Riya Singh, Intern Journalist): The clinical human trials of the indigenous Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin are expected to begin shortly at Jeevan Rekha Hospital. The hospital ranks among 12 hospitals listed to study the vaccine in 12 cities around the country. Trials have begun at five of these hospitals including AIIMS Delhi.
Jeevan Rekha Hospital will conduct the tests on 200 volunteers. The hospital had asked volunteers from 18 to 55 years of age to take part in the trials. So far about 40 have enrolled and have been tested. It would take about 48 hours to assess their status.
The first and second doses of the vaccine will be given to those who have tested Covid negative and whose blood samples are considered to be normal. There on, tests are conducted every month to search for antibodies development. Samples should be submitted to ICMR on a daily basis to collate the observations from all study sites.
