(Bhagya Luxmi, Intern Journalist) The politics of Basmati rice between the government of Madhya Pradesh and the government of Punjab is being heated. CM Shivraj Singh Chauhan of BJP has written a letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi complaining about Punjab CM Amarinder Singh. In fact, there has been controversy in Punjab and Madhya Pradesh over the GI tag of Basmati rice, Captain Amarinder is opposing the grant of GI tag to Basmati Rice of MP, which Madhya Pradesh has objected to.

Shivraj Singh wrote a letter to Sonia Gandhi stating that Amarinder Singh had written a letter to the PM stating that “in the larger interest of Punjab and other states, MP Basmati Rice is not allowed by GI All India Rice Exporters Association Private intervention. Doing so will affect India’s export potential and may benefit Pakistan in international markets in terms of basmati characteristics and quality scale. “

The CM of Madhya Pradesh told Sonia Gandhi that this statement of Amarinder Singh is anti-farmer, anti-Madhya Pradesh, and exposes the anti-farmer character of the Congress. Shivraj said that Basmati rice of MP is very tasty and is famous in the country and abroad for its flavors and fragrance. He said that GI tagging to MP would stabilize India’s basmati rice prices in the international market and boost the country’s exports.

  • India is the world leader in basmati exports

Let me tell you that due to the GI tag of Basmati rice, India is the largest exporter of Basmati in the international market because there is no GI tag of Basmati of any country other than India and Pakistan in the world. India produces a large quantity of basmati rice and Pakistan is not able to produce that much rice, so India is the world leader in the international market for basmati rice and exports about 4 million tonnes of rice every year.
