Rishika Iyer (Intern Journalist): Lionel Messi, a legendary football player and 6 time Ballon d’Or winner and four time champion league winner sent a fax to the football club stating this decision to leave the Barcelona team. He first joined team Barca in the year 2004 and has been one of the most important players of the team. Requesting for a transfer, he says that he wishes to exercise a clause in his contract which allows him to leave the team for free immediately.
On August 16, team Barca was beaten 8-2 by Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of this year’s Champions League. The Barca club believes that the clause has expired and the player is legally contracted to the team till the year 2021. They say in order to leave the club immediately there will be a 700 million euro deal.
Once the club released their statements, Messi fans stood outside the Nou camp to protest for the player against the board. A legal battle is now going to take place between the club and Lionel Messi.
Many team-mates and former team-mates have tweeted to show their support for the player. “Respect and admiration, Leo. All my support, friend,” tweeted Messi’s former team-mate Carles in Spanish.
