(Manisha Mahar, Intern Journalist); The 9th day of the monsoon session of Parliament. The Occupation Safety, Health, and Working Conditions Code Bill were passed in the Lok Sabha today. Apart from this, the Industrial Relations Code 2020 and Social Security 2020 Bill were also passed. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla held a meeting with members of opposition parties after the opposition boycotted the session.
The opposition parties boycotted the Lok Sabha session in solidarity with the suspended Rajya Sabha MPs and in opposition to the agricultural bills. In support of suspended Rajya Sabha MPs, the main party of opposition parties boycotted the Lok Sabha session, Congress openly supported those MPs who have been suspended for a week.
In the Lok Sabha proceedings that started after an hour of debarment, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary had said, “Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha are like twin brothers. If one is in misery, one has to handle the other. Our issue is related to agricultural bills, we want it to be withdrawn. With this, he said that Agriculture Minister Narendra Tomar agrees to withdraw it, so we have no problem in continuing the session.” Several bills have been passed in the Rajya Sabha amid the demand for suspension of MPs.
Several bills have been passed by voice vote, including the Companies Amendment Bill 2020, Banking Regulation Amendment Bill 2020, National Forensic Sciences University Bill 2020. The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill 2020 was also passed in the Rajya Sabha. Under this amended bill, now grains, pulses, oilseeds, onions, and potatoes will not come under the necessary commodities. On 15 September, the Bill was approved by the Lok Sabha and today it was passed in the Rajya Sabha by voice vote.
