(Riya Singh, Intern Journalist): On 2nd August 2016 Prime Minister Modi said “Humanity is not confined to male or female. We are giving social status to them. Go and meet them.” On this note of positivity, Yogi Adityanath led government of Uttar Pradesh has since then announced many reforms to cater to the LGBTQ+ community.

In 2019, the UP government announced to build the nation’s first university for transgenders in the Fazilnagar block of Kushinagar district.

A metro station has been dedicated to transgenders for employment opportunities and to help them become self-reliant and pave the way for their healthy inclusion and participation in the society, NMRC Managing Director Ritu Maheshwari said in a statement. The station has been painted in rainbow colors to spread awareness about the LGBTQ+ community and promote an inclusive culture.

Last month, the UP government amended a property act so that transgenders can claim their share in ancestral land. Earlier this month, the UP government has announced to set up a transgender welfare board that will identify, enlists, give ID cards, and enrolls transgenders into educational institutes.

Likewise, the UP government is promoting start-up ventures of women and transgender under the new UP Startup Policy 2020 with additional incentives and institutional support.

It is also important to know that views of Yogi Adityanath for the LGBTQ+ community have not always been supportive. Back in 2013, when the Supreme Court recriminalized same-sex relations and set aside the Delhi HC decision, he has supported it, but that is what is called progress. Changing ideologies when presented with facts.

Yogi’s bold reforms have brought a ray of hope for the LGBTQ community which was often a progressive subject and never got the limelight attention from so-called progressive regimes who ruled across India for decades but came from “Portrayed” conservative, orthodox “Yogi-Modi” duo.
