Doctors have been given the status of God on earth. He is also called the life-giver. Doctors do their duty in every situation and provide better treatment to patients. National Doctors Day is celebrated every year on July 1 to pay them respect for their honesty and dedication. Apart from this, this day is also celebrated to pay respect and tribute to the great doctor of India and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy.
How did National Doctors Day begin?
July 1 is the birthday and death anniversary of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. He has made significant contributions to the field of medicine. He is also called the architect of Bengal for his visionary leadership. In 1961, he was awarded the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna. In his memory, the then Central Government announced to celebrate National Doctors Day in the year 1991. Since then, National Doctors Day is being celebrated on July 1 every year.
Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy was born on 1 July 1882 in Patna city, Bihar, first completed his medical studies in Kolkata. After this, he received the degrees of MRCP and FRCS from London. It is said that being an Indian, he was not admitted to St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, applied to the Dean for about one and a half months, finally the Dean accepted his application for the 30th time after giving up. Roy was so capable that he got the degree of Physician and Surgeon simultaneously in two and a quarter years.
After completing his studies from London, Roy came to India and started his medical career in 1911. He earned a lot of name and respect in the field of medicine in India. Apart from this, Roy was also active in politics. Joined Congress party. Later also assumed the post of Chief Minister of West Bengal. He died on July 1, the day of his birthday at the age of 80
