(Riya Singh, Intern Journalist): There is a 200% increase in cyber crimes in India in the past two months, but we cannot blame Chinese actors, chief information security officer in the Prime Minister’s Office, Gulshan Rai, said on Monday. Instead he blamed the service sector to work from home (WFH) for the heightened incidents, and said people are “mindlessly” installing unverified softwares which may not have security features.
“It is certainly true that during the last couple of months, cyber incidents like hacking systems have gone up significantly. There is no evidence as of now that the attacks have gone up due to the tensions between the two countries” Rai said.
He said dedicated departments are in a position to control the situation and deter the attacks. Larger incidents of phishing, software failures, and malware have gone up. These cases have gone up not just because of heightened tensions, but because of the culture of working from home, these cases have increased since January and February-end.
Rai clarified that workplaces usually take appropriate security precautions and encouraged people to be more vigilant about what they’re installing and sticking to validated apps themselves.
