The team of doctors, led by Bharatvanshi surgeons, did another feat. Within a month, a successful transplant of another corona patient, in which both lungs were damaged.
According to the North-Western Memorial Hospital in Chicago, the surgery was performed last weekend. The 60-year-old patient was put on a life support system called ECMO for 100 days due to both lungs becoming defective. This machine works for the heart and lungs.
Dr. Ankit Bharat, Surgical Director of Medicine Lung Transplant Program said that this process of transplant kept our team very busy last weekend. Our team had transplanted several patients before receiving new lungs for this patient who had beaten Corona. Such a complicated operation requires a lot of hard work.
Born in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, Dr. Ankit also told that the patient was infected corona in late March and was brought here for transplant for long after being treated elsewhere. Prior to the operation, he was found negative in the corona test. Transplantation of both lungs typically takes six to seven hours, but this time it took 10 hours. The reason for this was that his lungs were sore due to corona and there was a serious problem of chest swelling.
The same team of doctors successfully performed the lung transplant of a corona-infected woman last June. This was the first case of both lung transplants of a corona-infected patient in the US.
