(Manisha Mahar, Intern Journalist) New Delhi: OTT platforms such as Netflix, Amazon, and digital platforms offering online news, current affairs, and audio-visual content will now come under the government’s watch. The central government released the notification on Wednesday. It said that online news portals including the OTT platform will also come under the information and broadcast ministry.
What is the current system?
Currently, the Press Council of India monitors print media and the News Broadcasters Association on news channels. Advertising and films oversee the Advertising Standards Council of India and the Central Board of Film Certification.
What will be the impact of the new decision?
The new decision will curb online portals without any evidence and false news. This will also increase law and order and credibility, as in many cases the content is given through online portals in the country also promotes crimes or riots. However, the cyber branch monitors this in all the states, but many times people escape due to no regulations for it.
