(Anjali Shreya, Intern Journalist): Accident of Air India Express plane at Kozhikode Airport in Kerala on Friday evening, in which 18 people, including two pilots, were died. It was raining heavily on Friday in Kerala. A plane coming from Dubai to Kozhikode under the Vande India Mission slipped on the runway.
Aviation sector regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had already warned about the runway of Kozhikode airport that an accident could happen there at any time. Recently, DGCA had also raised questions that there is a situation on the runway that if water can be filled somewhere, rubber can accumulate somewhere, which can be the reason for the accident.
In 2019, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation had given notice to the Airport Authority regarding Calicut Airport. At the same time, sources in the Airport Authority said that all the questions are being taken care of by the DGCA and we will resolve all the issues.
The airport of Kozhikode is considered dangerous in terms of operation. This is a tabletop runway. This means that the runway is at a height and the ground on both sides is deep. The runway is also small in terms of need and in the end, there is also a valley about 30 feet deep. Apart from this, the strips on both sides of the runway are also narrow, due to which it becomes difficult to run the rescue operation. Despite all these shortcomings, flights continued at the airport as usual.
