(Rishitha Jaladi, Intern Journalist)Lucknow: Shabnam from Uttar Pradesh is likely to be the first woman to be hanged after independence. Shabnam from Anroha, along with her boyfriend Saleem, brutally hacked seven members of her own family to death in 2008.
Shabnam, who did an MA in English, fell in love with Saleem, who discontinued his studies after failing in fifth-grade. The murder was committed after her family members refused their relationship. Among those killed were her mother, father, brothers, and sister.
Shabnam and Saleem were sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court in this case. With the Supreme Court also upholding the judgment of the following Court, As a last resort, Shabnam and Saleem filed a pardon petition to the president. But with that also being denied, the Mathura jail authorities arranged for their execution.
Pawan Jallade, who hanged the accused in the Nirbhaya case, will also hang Shabnam. The date has not yet been finalized. Jallade has already inspected the hanging room twice. Before Shabnam, sisters Seema Gavit and Renu Shinde were also ordered to be executed in Maharashtra. They were accused in the case of brutally killing five children. Their euthanasia was rejected by the President in 2014. Their execution date was not yet finalised. They are currently in Yerawada Jail
