(Ritambhara, intern journalist) Assam: The flood situation in Assam has improved considerably, but 2.42 lakh people are still affected in four of the 33 districts of the state.Another person has lost his life due to the flood. Disaster management officials gave this information on Friday.
Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) officials said that one person has died in Morigaon district, with the number of deaths due to monsoon flooding increased to 121 this year. According to ASDMA officials, out of 2.42 lakh flood affected people in four districts, 1.79 lakh people are from Nagaon district of central Assam alone.
In addition to the low-lying areas in the ongoing third wave of floods, over 22,802 hectares of cropland has been submerged in 380 villages in four districts – Nagaon, Hojai, Morigaon and Goalpara.
He said about 46,000 domesticated animals as well as wild animals in sanctuaries and national parks have also been affected by the floods. Apart from this, many roads, bridges, embankments, government buildings and schools have also been damaged.
The Brahmaputra in Dhubri district is flowing above the danger level and its subsidiary Kopili has crossed the danger mark in Nagaon district.
ASDMA officials said that Assam had witnessed devastating floods in 22 districts by the beginning of August, causing 22 deaths, while 26 others were killed due to landslides. It is a matter of relief that the flood situation has improved a lot in the first week of August.
The floods in Assam have affected 57 lakh people in 5,378 villages in 30 districts.
