Anurag Kashyap’s former assistant comes forward in support of the filmmaker. He shared that Kashyap was disappointed when an actress offered sexual favors in exchange for work in 2004.
(Milcah Anila, Intern Journalist) Mumbai: After Anurag Kashyap was accused of sexual misconduct by actress Payal Ghosh, the filmmaker is receiving support from many of his friends and other industry people. Jaydeep Sarkar, Kashyap’s former assistant, also took to social media to share an incident defending him. In a series of tweets, Sarkar said that Kashyap refused sexual favors offered by an actress in exchange for work.
Jaydeep Sarkar, in his recent tweets, recalled an incident from 2004 when he was working with Anurag. He wrote that an actress suggested sexual favors in exchange for work, which Anurag Kashyap refused. He added that Kashyap was disappointed seeing what some women have to do to get work in the film industry.
Anurag’s former assistant wrote, “This is the right time to recount this story. I was an assistant with @anuragkashyap72 in 2004. I was looking into secondary casting for Gulaal and was meeting many actors. A young actress, who wanted a part in the film insisted she wanted to meet Anurag.”
He added, “She waited a while and then Anurag got done with narration and agreed to meet her. The young actress probably assumed the only way to get the role was through the ‘casting couch’. She tried suggesting a few ‘favors’ verbally (sic).”
Jaydeep wrote that Anurag Kashyap politely refused the actress’s offer. He wrote, “but when Anurag politely ignored it, she gently let her sari pallu drop. A few times. At this point, Anurag got up and requested her to not do this. He told her she would get the part if she was the right fit and nothing else would work (sic).”
Anurag then walked out of the room. Jaydeep added, “Saying this, he walked out of the room, disappointed. I was shocked by what I saw, but I had seen a hero get out of a situation, with respect and empathy for her. Later he told me he was disappointed that so many young women feel this is the only way they can make it (sic).”
Jaydeep then said that he always observed Anurag’s respect for women. He wrote, “But having worked with Anurag, especially in casting, the one thing I always observed was his absolute respect for women (sic).”
Recently, Payal Ghosh accused Anurag Kashyap of sexual harassment on social media. She went to a police station to file a formal complaint late night on Monday. However, she couldn’t file it as he concerned police officer was not available. The actress will now register her complaint today (September 22).
Anurag Kashyap has refuted the allegations against him and claimed that these are baseless. He has received support from his former wives, Aarti Bajaj and Kalki Koechlin, along with actresses like Taapsee Pannu, Radhika Apte, and Saiyami Kher. Anurag’s director friends, Anubhav Sinha and Hansal Mehta have also come forward in his support.
