(Bhagat Luxmi, Intern Journalist) Arun Jaitley a leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha of the Indian Parliament and senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party is an experienced politician as well as a well-known lawyer. He was born on 28 December 1952 to the famous lawyer Maharaj Kishan Jaitley of Naraina Vihar area of New Delhi.
He got his early education at St. Xavier’s School in New Delhi. In 1973, he completed his bachelor’s degree in commerce from Shri Ram College of Commerce and enrolled in the Law Department at Delhi University in 1977 to study law.
He also participated in teaching and other programs during his studies. In 1974, he was elected the President of the Students’ Union of Delhi University. With this, his political career also started.
In 1974, Arun Jaitley joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. During the Emergency in 1975, he was placed under house arrest for 19 months after opposing the Emergency. In 1973, he also played an active role in the anti-corruption movement run by Jayaprakash Narayan and Rajnarayan.
After the Emergency in 1977, he started preparing for his advocacy in the High Court. He completed his preparations in many high courts of the country before going to the Supreme Court. In 1990, Arun Jaitley started his job as a senior lawyer in the Supreme Court. He was appointed Additional Solicitor General in 1989 in VP Singh Government. He also did paperwork investigating the Bofors scandal. He has written several articles of law.
In 1991, he became a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He became a BJP spokesperson in the 1999 general election and after the BJP came to power at the Center, he was given independent charge of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. He was then made the Independent Minister of State for Disinvestment.
Jaitley was given the additional charge of this ministry after Ram Jethmalani left the Ministry of Law, Justice and Company Affairs. After the Lok Sabha elections held in 2000, he was made the Minister of Law, Justice, Company Affairs, and Shipping. After 2004, Arun Jaitley returned to his legal profession. In 2006, Jaitley became a member of Rajya Sabha from Gujarat. He played an important role in the 84th and 91st amendments of the Constitution.
In 2009, Jaitley became the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, while he lost to Amritsar in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, but after the formation of the BJP government at the Center, Narendra Modi expressed confidence that he was awarded the important post of Finance Minister. After some time, he also served as the defense minister. However, Modi refused to take up the post of minister in Government-2 due to ill health.
