(Bhagya Luxmi, Intern Journalist) Senior BJP leader and former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Babulal Gaur died on August 21 in the capital Bhopal.
Babulal Gaur, born on 2 June 1930 in Pratapnagar district of Uttar Pradesh, has been a prominent figure in the politics of Madhya Pradesh as a leader of the BJP. He was the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh from 23 August 2004 to 29 November 2005.
Gaur was the Urban Administration and Development Minister in Shivraj’s cabinet. Gaur was first elected as an Independent MLA in the by-election to Bhopal South Assembly constituency in 1974. He contested from Govindpura Assembly constituency in 1977 and contested and won elections continuously till the year 2013. He was an MLA for 9 consecutive times. In the 2018 assembly elections, the party did not give him a ticket on the basis of age and replaced him with his daughter-in-law Krishna Gaur. Krishna also upheld the tradition of his victory.
BA, LLB Gaur, held the record by winning by a margin of 59 thousand 666 votes in the 1993 assembly elections and broke his own record by winning by a margin of 64 thousand 212 votes in the 2003 assembly elections. He was the Minister of Local Government, Law and Legislative Affairs, Parliamentary Affairs, Public Relations, Urban Welfare, Urban Housing and Rehabilitation, and Bhopal Gas Tragedy Relief from 7 March 1990 to 15 December 1992.
He was also the Leader of Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from 4 September 2002 to 7 December 2003. Babulal Gaur had joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh since 1946. He also participated in satyagrahas organized in states like Delhi and Punjab. Gaur also spent 19 months in jail during the Emergency.
In 1974, Babulal Gaur was given the status of ‘freedom fighter’ by the Madhya Pradesh government for his involvement in the ‘Goa Mukti Andolan’. Before joining active politics, Babulal Gaur had worked in Bhopal’s textile mill and participated in many movements in the interest of workers. He has been one of the founding members of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh.
