(Anjali Shreya, Intern Journalist): At least 70 people have died in a major blast in Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, on Tuesday. At the same time, more than 4 thousand people are injured. The health minister of the country has given this information. There is a stir in the entire international world after this incident. Officials say the incident occurred due to explosives kept in a closed warehouse for the last 6 years. However, the exact cause of the blast is yet to be ascertained.
Meanwhile, Lebanese President Michel Aoun tweeted that it is absolutely unacceptable that 2750 tonnes of ammonium were placed unsafely in the middle of the city. The investigation has now been conducted in this matter. Lebanon’s Supreme Defense Council (Department of Defense) has said that whoever is responsible for the incident will face a long sentence.
According to local media, the crowd gathered in hospitals since the explosion in Beirut. The impact of the explosion was seen 10 kilometers away from the place where the explosion took place. The debris of hundreds of buildings appeared on the streets, while the glass panes of the shops were also broken. An eyewitness of the blast told that all the buildings in the vicinity were destroyed. He said that the surrounding has become dark and that people on the streets are coming out of glass and debris.
Following this incident, President Mitchell has declared a three-day national mourning. Along with this, he said to release 100 billion lire (about 495 crores) as emergency funds. It is reported that the sound of the blast was heard 240 kilometers away to the island of Cyprus.
