(Aditya Shaw, Intern Journalist)Bengal: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday banned the use and sale of fireworks on Kali Puja, Jagadhatri Puja, and Chhath in the wake of the covid-19 epidemic. A division bench of Justices Sanjeev Banerjee and Arijit Banerjee gave this direction while hearing two PILs. Kali Puja is on 15 November.
The court directed that the ban would remain in force during Jagaddhatri Puja, Chhath, and Kartik Puja as well. The court said that the guidelines applicable during Durga Puja such as a ban on entry of pandals etc. will also apply during Kali Puja. The bench commended the state government for effectively implementing the guidelines directed by the court on Durga Puja.
Court order, ensure norms during Kali Puja:
The court asked the police to ensure that the norms are strictly enforced during Kali Puja. The court said that 15 people would be allowed in Kali Puja pandals in an area up to 300 square meters and 45 persons would be allowed in large pandals. The bench also did not allow the procession during immersion. The state government on Tuesday appealed to the people not to burn firecrackers during Kali Puja and Diwali to curb air pollution.
Chief Secretary said, celebrate Diwali and Kali Puja without firecrackers
Chief Secretary Alapan Bandopadhyay had said, ‘With the cooperation of everyone, we want to celebrate Kali Puja and Diwali festivals without firecrackers. The administration appeals to people not to use firecrackers. ‘A consortium of firecrackers has already demanded compensation of Rs 2 lakh for each licensed cracker dealers numbering more than 53,000.
