(Aditya Shaw, Intern Journalist): The Calcutta High Court on Thursday said that this is the appropriate time for police reforms to separate the law and order branch from the investigation branch in West Bengal. While hearing the case of a missing girl, the court said that criminal cases are preyed upon for not having a proper investigation and not presenting proper evidence.
A bench of Justices Sanjeev Banerjee and Arijit Banerjee said that while maintaining law and order is an important part of the duty of the police, the investigation branch cannot be compromised. The court said that despite giving more time on December 1, the state government asked for more time on Thursday.
The court said that the inspector in-charge of Arambagh police station in the case filed a report, but there is no indication of where the girl is. The court directed the Hooghly Superintendent of Police to file a report on December 21, the next date of hearing.
