(Rishitha Jaladi, Intern Journalist)Uttar Pradesh: Fellow cricketers and journalists celebrate the life and times of Chetan Chauhan. The former India cricketer and UP cabinet minister passed away on August 16, 2020. He had tested positive for COVID-19 in July.
Chetan Chauhan is known for his courage on the field but very few know of his bravery when he came to the rescue of Navjot Singh Sidhu, Yograj Singh & Rajinder Ghei in the days following the assassination of former PM Indira Gandhi in 1984. Considered one of the courageous batsmen of Indian cricket, he featured in 40 Test matches and seven ODIs.
Sunil Gavaskar tweeted via his official Twitter account saying” His favorite song as we walked out to face some of the most hostile bowlers in the game was “Muskura ladle, muskura.” (Smile dear, smile) Now that my partner is no more, how can I “muskura?”
Chauhan was one of the grittiest opening batsmen of the world, who can forget him taking short-pitched balls on his chest and shrugging it off, wonderous battles with the most fearsome fast bowlers …was so sure he would win this battle too. But unfortunately, he passes away at the age of 73 suffering a cardiac arrest.
“Shri Chetan Chauhan Ji distinguished himself as a wonderful cricketer and later as a diligent political leader. He made effective contributions to public service and strengthening the BJP in UP. Anguished by his passing away. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti.” Tweeted Modi. His contribution to the game as well as to the administration and will always be remembered!
