(Pooja Dubey, Intern Journalist) The West Bengal government has set seven separate days for the month of August for the complete lockdown to curb the pace of Coronavirus infection that is growing in the state.
The government changed the dates thrice in six hours and finally came to the conclusion that the complete lockdown will be implemented in the state on August 5, 8, 16, 17, 23, 24, and 31 in the month of August.
The opposition parties targeted the government over the change in dates and said that “The government was unable to stop Corona and was only doing appeasement. CPM MLA Sujan Chakraborty attacked Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee and asked “This is a government or a circus?”
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday announced the lockdown dates after holding two separate press conferences. In the first press conference, she said that “The lockdown will not be implemented on August 1 due to Eid and on August 15 due to Independence Day, besides lockdown will be implemented every weekend.”
In the second press conference, CM Mamata admitted her mistake and announced new dates for the lockdown. The Chief Minister said that “The lockdown would be imposed on nine different days in August. There was no mistake in the government calendar. This was our mistake.”
However, at 10 am on Tuesday, the Bengal Home Department tweeted that the lockdown would be implemented for seven days in August and not for nine days. The government received several appeals against certain lockdown dates that coincided with festivals.
BJP leader Sayantan Basu questioned, “Why there is a lockdown on 5 August, when the foundation stone of the Ram temple will be laid in Ayodhya, while 9 August marks the anniversary of the Quit India Movement.”
