(Aditya Shaw, Intern Journalist):Cyclone Nivar in the Bay of Bengal has caught pace. Chennai has been raining continuously for the last 24 hours. The condition is that many areas are flooded. Former CM Karunanidhi’s house has also been flooded and its video is now going viral. The Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast it to turn into a dangerous cyclone.
Nivaran will hit the coast of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Wednesday evening. During this time, strong winds can run from 100 to 150 kilometers per hour. 1200 rescue troopers have been deployed in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh to deal with the storm. 800 such Troopers are placed on standby. Railways have canceled 12 pairs of trains. It has been decided to dismantle several trains in advance of the storm affected stations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held discussions with the Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Tuesday about the prevention. Modi insisted on evacuating the low-lying areas and moving people to safer areas. The PM assured both the CMs of all possible help.
In the wake of the storm, large dams, including the Chamberambakkam in Tamil Nadu, are being constantly monitored. People living in low-lying areas are being evacuated to safer places. On Tuesday, the storm was 410 from Puducherry and 450 km from Tamil Nadu. The rains have started in many parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry even before the storm came. The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in many places on Wednesday.
