(Riya Singh, Intern Journalist): Protesters in California burned a courthouse, destroyed a police station and abused officers late Saturday after a nonviolent rally erupted, police said. Demonstrators smashed glass, spray-painted graffiti, fired flares and aimed lasers at police.
Several tweets called for unity and urged the organizers to provide the protesters with protected areas locations. Earlier Saturday night, the rally started with organizations called the Wall of Moms, similar to a collective that was founded in Portland, Oregon, when demonstrators confronted U.S. officials sent to that city to guard a federal court.
President Donald Trump had ordered the federal officers to crack down on the regular marches following George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis on 25 May. The rally started peacefully in Oakland but later turned violent into the night. Police reported an illegal gathering at 11:30 pm and officials ordered the crowd to disperse.
The fire broke out at the Supreme Court House in Alameda City and was reportedly extinguished a short time later. At one point, police said protesters were smashing windows and shouting racist terms at people. The Police tweeted pictures of shattered glass and splattered paint at a police station.
