(Deepshikha Gautam, Intern Journalist) New Delhi: The 5th General Council meeting of the Indian Highway Engineer Academy (IAHE) was conducted through video conferencing. The meeting was chaired by Shri Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways. The meeting was attended by Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways General (Retd) Dr. VK Singh, Secretary of Road Transport and Highways and Director General (RD), and members of SS and Governance Council.

The Indian Highway Engineer Academy (IAHE) was established in 1983. IAHE is imparting training to Highway Engineers and Professionals working in Central Government on Initial Phase / Refresher Course / Training Highways, Bridge and Tunnel Engineering / Orientation Programs / Management Development Programs / Strategic Training Programs, etc. The academy is also training state government, public sector undertakings, local body personnel, contractors and consultants, etc.

The need to significantly expand and improve the activities of IAHE was felt to contribute better to highway development programs. Accordingly, the Ministry constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Shri YS Malik, former Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), to make recommendations to replace IAHE as a premier institution of world-class in the highway sector. The council gave the committee recommendations for three different tasks to expand the scope of IAHE.
(i) training, (ii) applied research and development in the highway and public transport sector, and (iii) road safety and regulation. The committee decided to take further necessary action to transform IAHE into a world-class premier institution in the highway sector.
