Rishika Iyer (Intern Journalist): Just like the rest of the world, the pandemic has severely impacted the Indian economy too. Over 1.89 crore (18.9 Million) people have lost their jobs since the beginning of the lockdown. Initially, back in the month of April loss of jobs were noticed in small hawkers, traders, and the daily wage workers. This situation worsened severely and has started affecting people with highly paid jobs.

Over 50 lakh people have lost their jobs in the month of July, 39 lakh in June, 1 lakh jobs in May, and 1.77 crore jobs were lost. These salaried jobs once lost, are very hard to get back. This has caused a very worrisome situation among citizens working in almost all sectors of society. Due to the lockdown, almost all companies have cut salaries and reduced the number of people they employ.

Many daily wage workers who once worked in cities have now returned back to their villages. Due to this, there has been a surge in the number of farmers with over 1.49 crore people taking up farming as a source of livelihood.

400 million people have lost their jobs worldwide due to the corona-virus pandemic.
