According to various research papers, the probability of giving birth to twins of female elephants is less than one percent. Also, the chances of both the children being alive are also less. T Prasad, Director of Wildlife Health, Department of Wildlife Conservation, said elephant twins were born for the first time in Sri Lanka.
He said that these elephant babies are currently three to four weeks old. Sumit Pilapitiya, a prominent wildlife researcher, said the elephant’s twin babies have been born in Sri Lanka for the first time.
“We were watching a group of elephants for the last few days and yesterday we saw that an adult female elephant gave birth to twins. This has happened for the first time in the country. He said that the authorities are taking all measures to protect the female elephant and her twins.
Today elephant is the largest living organism of the land. The elephant has a gestation period of 22 months, which is the longest among the ground animals. At birth, the elephant baby weighs about 104 kg. The elephant usually lives for 50 to 70 years, although the elephant’s longest longevity has been recorded at 82 years.
