(Anjali Shreya, Intern Journalist): For the first time in New Zealand’s history, someone has been sentenced to life imprisonment for committing a terrorist act and killing 51 people. The person who has been sentenced is named Brenton Tarrant. Brenton was accused of killing 51 namazis on 15 March 2019 at Noor Mosque in New Zealand, with automatic weapons attack. Tarrant is an Australian citizen. This incident shook the whole world. Tarrant did the attack live on Facebook. The Heads of State of all countries had strongly condemned the incident in one voice and appealed for the convict to be severely punished. After this punishment, now the families of those killed in this incident must have got satisfaction. The PM of New Zealand has welcomed this decision.
The sentencing hearing began on Monday after Brenton was charged. He had admitted before the court the crime of involvement in terrorist acts and attempted murder of 51 people and killing 40 people. He was sentenced for four consecutive days after which he was sentenced on Thursday. During this time, the court should also record the statements of all the survivors. Trent was given strict security arrangements when he was sentenced by Judge Cameron Mander of the Christchurch High Court. Tarrant had himself argued during the High Court hearing to avoid this punishment or to have a lesser sentence.
During the sentencing, Brenton stood with his head bowed and handcuffed in the courtroom. He was wearing light brown clothes with prisoners. Brenton is the first person in New Zealand’s history to be sentenced to life imprisonment. It is worth noting that on 15 March 2019, a large number of people had gathered for prayers in the Noor Mosque of Christchurch, New Zealand. At the same time, with automatic weapons in his hands, Brenton entered the mosque and started firing bullets. He kept on coming in front of him and targeting him with his bullets. He was live-streaming the entire incident. The government constituted the Royal Commission to investigate the incident. Most of the people killed in this incident were from Pakistan while the second number were Indians. Apart from this, the victims of this incident were from Bangladesh, Egypt, UAE, Fiji, Somalia, Syria, Indonesia, Jordan, Kuwait, New Zealand.
