(Riya Singh, Intern Journalist): There were five people killed and hostages taken in a church west of Johannesburg, South African police said on Saturday. In a Twitter post, police said they were alerted to a “hostage situation and shooting” at the International Pentecost Holiness Church in Zuurbekom in the early hours of the morning. Thirty arrests have been made, and more than 25 firearms have been seized, police said, adding that hostage negotiators are still on stage. Police haven’t said why or how many hostages were taken. There had been a church leadership dispute and a church official was quoted as saying that approximately 200 people were taken hostage.
