(Pooja Dubey, Intern Journalist) Former International Athletics Federations Association (IAAF) president Lamin Diak was sentenced to two years in prison on Wednesday. He was sentenced for his role in a scheme that allowed Russian athletes to compete by paying money when they should have been suspended for doping.
The IAAF chief, a Paris court from 1999 to 2015, sentenced the 87-year-old Diak, who was the head of the IAAF from 1999-2015. The court also sentenced Diak to a two-year prison sentence and fined him five million euros ($ 590000). Diak was found guilty of multiple corruption charges and breach of trust but was acquitted of money laundering charges.
During the hearing of Diak’s case in June, prosecutors requested a four-year prison sentence and a five-million-euro fine. Diak received this sentence from Judge Rose Marie Hunault.
The court also convicted five others. The court also convicted five others, including Diak’s son Masata Diak.Masata has been the marketing consultant of the IAAF. The judge said that ‘Masata’s companies were given one crore five million dollars while his father was the head of the IAAF.’
Son Masata denied extradition Masata lives in Senegal who has refused his extradition. He was not in court during the pronouncement of the verdict and did not even attend the six-day hearing in June. The court sentenced him to five years in prison and fined one million euros.
