(Rishika Iyer, Intern Journalist): A lawsuit was filed against the four Minneapolis police officers who were responsible for the murder of George Floyd. This incident occurred on May 25th when Floyd was detained by a white police officer Derek Chauvin. He was handcuffed because a teenage store worker claimed that Floyd had forged a $20 note. Officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee against Floyd’s neck for almost 8 minutes, while he was complaining of breathlessness.
He passed away due to cardiopulmonary arrest caused due to compression on the neck. The three other officers present did not stop Derek and instead argued with people who took the footage of this abuse. All four officers were fired one day after the incident had occurred.
Floyd’s death sparked the Black Lives Matter movement all around the world and protests erupted across America demanding justice. After continuous protests across all platforms and countries, the officers were put behind bars. Derek Chauvin is charged with third degree murder, second degree murder and manslaughter. The other three officers are currently charged under second degree murder and manslaughter.
The complaint was filed to fight against the prevalent racism against black people in America and especially in the city of Minneapolis. “The City of Minneapolis has a history of policies, procedures and deliberate indifference that violates the rights of arrestees, particularly Black men, and highlights the need for officer training and discipline” said Ben Crump. Crump is the attorney representing George Floyd’s family.
