(Rishitha Jaladi, Intern Journalist) Vijayawada: While there has been a lot of babble about the disposal of COVID patients, very little attention is paid in disposing of the PPE kits and Masks. From the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, people all over started using a mask. It has become a basic necessity. But now it’s a common sight where masks are dumped into the dustbins which are ultimately cleaned by the sanitary workers. The scenario at most of the quarantine centers is the same.

Masks disposed in public places

Experts say that Unscientifically disposed of masks are more lethal than the dead bodies as they can trigger the spread of the virus faster and better than the earlier. Dr Sumita Shankar, An associate Professor at Rangaraya Medical College, Kakinada says that The virus in a used mask can stay active for a week and urged not to throw the masks in public places. However, many are still reluctant to wear a mask. They are only using it to avoid paying penalties as the State Government has made, wearing a mask is mandatory, and failing each person should pay Rs 1000 in urban areas and Rs 500 in rural areas.
