(Aditya Shaw, Intern Journalist): 5 players have been found corona infected prior to the National Hockey Camp starting in Bengaluru. These include Indian team captain Manpreet. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) said that the reports of these players have come positive in the test before the camp. Apart from Manpreet, the reports of defender Surendra Kumar, Jaskaran Singh, drag-flicker Varun Kumar, and Krishna B. Pathak have also come positive. Manpreet has said that he has self-quarantined himself at the Sai campus. I am very happy with the way Sai has handled the matter. I feel good now and hope to recover soon.
In Unlock-1, the players reached their respective homes on 19 June – from the beginning of the year the Indian hockey team was running a training camp at the Sai Center in Bangalore. All the players were stuck in Bengaluru due to the lockdown. The camp was also closed as well. After this, the players reached their respective homes on June 19 in Unlock-1. All the players were to come to the camp in July, but this was postponed due to the lockdown in Karnataka.
32 men and 25 women players were present at the Sai Center for the camp – All players had joined the camp from August 4, after Sai’s approval. Since then all the players were in Quarantine for two weeks. During this time the players got a corona test. For the camp, 32 players from the men’s team and 25 from the women’s team are present at the Sai Center.
India was placed in Pool-A with Argentina, Spain at the Tokyo Olympics – the first match of the Indian men’s hockey team in the Tokyo Olympics for a year will be from New Zealand on July 24 next year.
