(Anjali Shreya, Intern Journalist): The Guwahati High Court, in a recent judgment, has directed the coordinator of the National Civil Register (NRC) to explain how the name of the petitioner joined the register despite the fact that at the relevant time, proceedings against him were going on. A division bench of Justices Manojit Bhuyan and Justice Soumitra Saikia said, “Let the Assam State Coordinator, NRC, file a comprehensive affidavit, and bring the conditions on record with the necessary details, to put such persons in the National Civil Register Who were disqualified and not legally claimed to be in the National Civil Register. “
The order was passed in a proceeding initiated by Rahima Begum, a resident of Nalbari district, against an order of the Foreigners’ Tribunal in which she was declared a foreigner. The Court observed that the name of the petitioner was present in the NRC while proceedings were initiated against him and continued based on the reference made by the Superintendent of Police (Seema), Nalbari. The bench stated staunchly, “It is against the law to put a name like this.”
