( Kajal Singh intern journalist): The ICC says that tournaments cannot be organized amid restrictions on travel.
In view of the havoc of the Coronavirus, the International Cricket Council has taken a big decision. The ICC has postponed the 2021 Women’s World Cup and 2022 Under World Cup qualifying tournaments. The qualifying tournament was to be held in July. The ICC has not announced new dates for the tournament for now.
The women’s qualifying tournament was to be held in Sri Lanka from July 3 to 19 in which 10 teams including host Sri Lanka were to take part. The other teams were Bangladesh, Ireland, Netherlands, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, USA, West Indies, and Zimbabwe.
The ICC said, “It has been decided to postpone the qualification process of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2021 and the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2022 after consultation with members and concerned governments and public health officials.”
The qualifying process of the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2022 was, to begin with, the European regional qualifier to be held in Denmark from 24 to 30 July. “We have decided to postpone two upcoming qualifying events due to ongoing travel restrictions, global health concerns, and advice from the government and public health officials,” the ICC said.
The ICC says that the health of the teams and their associated staff is a priority at this time. Competitions for the ICC Under-19 World Cup Regional Qualifier Division 2 are also under review. The Africa qualifiers are scheduled to take place from August 7 to 14 in Tanzania and the Asia qualifiers from December 1 to 9 in Thailand. In all five regions, Division 1 competitions will be held in 2021.
