(Riya Singh, Intern Journalist): As higher education adapts to teaching and learning at a distance, the workload and the learning load of adopting a new delivery model are taking a huge toll on the lives of those in higher education. This is an immense problem that is growing rapidly. While some students are thriving through online learning, the toll of the virus, isolation, increased workloads, and other associated effects are rising among many students, staff, and faculty members. It must not be underestimated.
In a shocking incident that came forward, an IIT Roorkee Polymer Engineering professor rants about a student’s absence after his father’s death.
He threatens to deduct the attendance marks as the student’s attendance was less than the required threshold. The important thing to notice here is that IIT Roorkee has scraped attendance marks before the starting of this semester.
Also, he compares the student’s situation with some cricketers who did not attend their father’s funeral as they were busy in the National duty.
This is a clear example of how Indian education considers student’s mental health as nothing, according to them it’s just a myth.
