(Riya Singh, Intern Journalist): The lung is first to be affected by the covid-19 infection. Lungs become swollen when the infection is severe, it gets filled with fluid and becomes difficult to breathe. When the normal functioning of the lungs is disturbed, they are not able to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide which might cause severe pneumonia or Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). People who have asthma, bronchitis, or any other respiratory problem, or seasonal influenza have weakened their immune system, need to be extra vigilant about their health.
Preventive measures: Smoking, air pollution, exposure to chemicals, dust, and re-occurrence of lower respiratory tract infection, make the conditions of lungs serious, so avoid them. The risk of infection is greatly increased due to dirt. Keep your surroundings clean. Take care of personal cleanliness as well. Take a bath with lukewarm water daily, brush twice a day, and wash your hands whenever necessary. Take care of the cleanliness of food items. See a good doctor immediately if you have symptoms, which last more than a week, like shortness of breath, weakness, cough, and fatigue.
