(Priyanka Gupta, Intern Journalist)Melbourne: More than 38 thousand Indians have acquired citizenship in Australia in the year 2019-20. This number is 60 percent higher than the Australian citizenship granted to Indians last year and Australia has the highest number of citizenship received by people from any other country. Australia’s Acting Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services, and Multicultural Affairs, Alan Tudge, said on Wednesday that citizenship has an important role in the country’s emergence as a socially united, multicultural nation.
Of the more than two lakh people who got citizenship of Australia in the year 2019-2020, 38,209 are Indians. In addition 25,011 British, 14,764 Chinese, and 8,821 Pakistanis gained citizenship of Australia. Tudge said, ‘Being an Australian citizen means more than living and working here. It means being committed to our nation, people, and values. When one becomes a citizen, he vows to protect Australia’s rights, liberty, law, and democratic values. Expresses our own desire to be included in our successful multicultural nation. ‘
Today, Tudge said in a statement, “It is a great privilege to be an Australian citizen, which recognizes both rights and duties.” I wish all those who have taken this important step. ‘ The Australian government organized an online event in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic in which more than 60,000 people were granted citizenship.
