(Pooja Dubey, Intern Journalist) The Indian men’s hockey team, which has been waiting for a medal for four decades, will begin its campaign at the Tokyo Olympics against New Zealand on July 24. The women’s team will play the first match of the Netherlands on the same day.
The eight-time champion Indian team is placed in Group A along with Australia, Argentina, Spain, New Zealand and hosts Japan, while Group B consists of Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, UK, Canada, and South Africa.
The Tokyo Olympics were due in 2020 but have been postponed for a year due to the coronavirus epidemic. The Indian men’s hockey team won the eighth and last Olympic gold in 1980 in Moscow, playing against Australia on 25 July, Spain on 27 July, defending champions Argentina on 29 July and Japan on 30 July.
In the women’s section, India has been placed in Pool A along with the Netherlands, Germany, UK, Ireland, and South Africa. Pool B consists of Australia, Argentina, New Zealand, Spain, China, and Japan. The women’s team will play Germany (26 July), Britain (28 July), Argentina (29 July) and Japan (30 July) after playing against the Netherlands on 24 July
The first hockey event was to be held from July 25 to August 7, 2020. The International Hockey Federation on Friday announced a change in the order and location of the matches, with a revised schedule. Next year, the first match of men’s hockey in the Olympics will be between Japan and Australia, while in the first match of the women’s category, the world champion and world number one team Netherlands will face India.
The top four teams from both pools will play the quarter-finals. The quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals of the men’s section will be held on August 1, 3, and 5, while in the women’s section, these matches will be played on August 2, 4 and 6.
