(Deepshikha Gautam, Intern Journalist) Mumbai: Union Minister of State for AYUSH and Defense (Independent Charge) Shripad Naik launched ‘Vagir’, a 5th Scorpene-class submarine of Project 75 in the Arabian Ocean, through video conferencing at Mazgaon Dock, Mumbai. The Indian Navy on 21 September 2017 assigned the first of the six Scorpene-class submarines ‘Kalavari’ by the shipbuilding unit Mazagaon Dock Limited (MDL). According to a naval officer, it was described as a milestone in the Indian Navy’s submarine program as the vessel greatly strengthened India’s maritime power.
The Indian Navy celebrated the fiftieth year of submarine operations in January 2017 as the Golden Jubilee and on this special occasion, the Indian Navy released footage of India’s deadliest Scorpene-class submarine INS Kalavari. The Kalavari submarine was described by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a perfect example of Make in India.
On 19 September 2019, the Navy’s second Scorpene class submarine INS ‘Khanderi’ was launched in Mumbai. The ‘Khanderi’ submarine was launched at the event organized at Mazgaon Dock Limited Shipyard. INS ‘Khanderi’, the second Scorpene-class submarine, was inducted into the Navy on 28 September 2019 in Mumbai. The third submarine INS Karanj was launched at Mazagon Dock in Mumbai and Naval Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba was also present on the occasion. This submarine was built by Mazgaon Dockyard in collaboration with France. Crafted by modern technology, the submarine Karanj specializes in dodging enemy ships with low noise. The fourth navy of the Scorpene class was launched by the Indian Navy at Vela Mazgaon Dock Limited (MDL).
