(Priyanka Gupta, Intern Journalist)New Delhi: Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi has demanded the release of PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti. Rahul tweeted and said, “More damage to democracy comes when the Government of India (GOI) illegally detains the leaders of political parties. This is the perfect time when Mehbooba Mufti is released.” Rahul Gandhi has raised this demand at a time when the custody of Mehbooba Mufti has been extended for three months.
Earlier, senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram have also made similar demands. In the past, Chidambaram had said that Mehbooba Mufti’s detention under the PSA is an abuse of law. It is an attack on the constitutional rights of citizens. Chidambaram had said that the 61-year-old former chief minister is under the watch of security guards round the clock. Then how is she the threat to public safety? Let me tell you that PDP President Mehbooba Mufti has been in custody since Article 370 was removed from Jammu and Kashmir last year.
Last year, Mehbooba Mufti had warned the Central Government about Article 35A in Jammu and Kashmir and said that tampering with Article 35A in the state would be like setting fire to gunpowder. She also said that if a hand tries to touch Article 35A, not only that hand, but the whole body will be burnt to ashes. This threat from Mehbooba Mufti had also become an issue during the last elections. The BJP had strongly condemned Mehbooba Mufti’s statement and pledged for the unity and integrity of India.
