(Aditya Shaw, Intern Journalist): In Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, the police have decided to re-introduce the ‘no helmet, not petrol’ system, to give petrol pumps to motorcycle riders who are not wearing helmets. An official gave information about this.

The official said, ‘No helmet, no petrol’ rule will come into effect from December 8 and will continue for the next 60 days. Kolkata Police Commissioner Anuj Sharma said in an order issued last Friday, “It has been found that on many occasions people driving or riding on two-wheelers do not wear helmets and violations of rules have increased on many levels.”

In July 2016, the city police implemented a similar rule ‘no helmet, no petrol’ after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed displeasure over bikers not wearing helmets.
