Madras High Court imposes fine of Rs 10 lakh on Patanjali Ayurved

(Anjali Shreya, Intern Journalist): The Madras High Court has imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh against Patanjali Ayurved and Divya Yoga Mandir Trust. Justice CV Karthikeyan issued an order on Thursday, prohibiting the use of the company’s ‘coronil’ trademark. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on the defendants. Along with the fine, the court said that they were engaged in earning money by selling immunity boosters for colds, coughs, and fever in the name of treating corona, taking advantage of the epidemic-scared people.

The court order says that in the time of this disaster, there are many such organizations that are helping people out of selflessness. In such a case, the defendant should give the amount of penalty to those institutions. Adyar Cancer Institute and Government Yoga and Naturopathy Medical College are two such organizations which are treating people free of cost. Therefore, two-five lakh rupees should be given to these two institutions.

The court has said in the order that the defendants should pay the money to both the institutions by 21 August and the registry should be filed in the High Court by 25 August.
