(Deepshikha Gautam, Intern Journalist) Hong Kong: In August, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo defended 12 Hong Kong nationals detained for allegedly attempting to flee Taiwan by ferry. He said that those taken into custody have not committed any crime. “I believe they are entitled to freedom and every right that every person has,” Pompeo said Wednesday at the online event of the John S. McCain Freedom Award.
He said, “I am not alone to believe that the whole of America is with me.” Explain that the Hong Kong police did not even give the lawyer access after detaining these people under the Security Act. Pompeo’s statement came after nine other people were arrested last week on charges of helping these 12 people leave the city.
