(Namita Pradhan, Intern Journalist) Mysore, Karnataka which is famous for its mulberry silk produced in the country. It contributes nearly 45% of the total mulberry silk in the Country. It is registered under KSIC. KSIC is the owner of the Mysore Silk brand.
It was first initiated during the period of Tipu Sultan around 1780-1790AC. The Mysore district becomes the top multivoltine silk producer in India.
The silk is produced in the Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation (KSIC). It was founded in 1912 by Sri Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar, king of Mysore. After Independence of India, it was controlled by the Mysore state Sericulture Department. In 1980 it was handed over to the KSIC, Government of Karnataka industry. Today it produces many varieties like sarees, shirts, kurta’s, silk dhoti, and neckties. Mysore silk was now known globally for its piece of work.
