(Riya Singh, Intern Journalist): Nagaland government has banned the import, trading, and sale of dog meat in the north-eastern state. The state government has taken an initiative to ban the commercial trading of dogs and canine meat. Street dogs caught from neighboring states including West Bengal are smuggled in Dimapur, and other districts and towns too.
Since the trade is unregulated, no factual data is available on the total volume of dog meat being consumed annually in the state. However, according to HSI and PFA, around 30,000 dogs are smuggled routinely to Nagaland, where they are beaten to death and then sold in the markets.
