(Rishitha Jaladi, Intern Journalist)Delhi: Saying “life should move on even in Covid-19 times,” the Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a petition seeking postponement of National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). These exams were postponed two times already due to the COVID-19 crisis, and students demand to extend the time a little more.
National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is the medical entrance exam for all medical admissions for about 16 lakh students. Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is an engineering entrance examination for over 9 lack applicants
As per the public notices issued by NTA, JEE (Main) April 2020 is scheduled from September 1-6, while NEET-UG 2020 exam is programmed for September 13-6. ‘COVID may continue for a year more. Are you going to wait for another year,’ asked Justice Arun Mishra while hearing the petition filed by 11 students from 11 States.
“Life cannot be stopped. We have to move ahead taking all precautions. Are students ready to waste one whole year?” asked SC. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, on behalf of National testing agency, argued “exams should be conducted by taking prior precautions”
Advocate Alakh Alok Srivastav filed the plea on behalf of 11 students belonging to 11 states. he has raised various grounds, like “Right to Health/ Life” of students, tender age (17-18 years) of students, Lesser Number of COVID cases on last two occasions when NEET JEE was postponed & COVID cases today, Flood Situation, Example of Karnataka CET, UP B.Ed, etc.
Admit cards of all the aspirants of NEET and JEE will be released soon, said NTA. Many NEET and JEE aspirants took to twitter saying “The Supreme Court has given the judgment “virtually” that students must appear for the exam “physically”. There is no country as inhuman as us! Student’s lives do not matter here.”
