(Aditya Shaw, Intern Journalist): A special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday sentenced two Bangladeshi nationals belonging to the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) terror group to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for plotting terrorist activities in India. Sahadat Hussain (26), the resident of Jessore district of Bangladesh, and Omar Farooqui (27), resident of Dhaka, were convicted under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Both of them were sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 26,000 on Hussain and a fine of Rs 33 thousand on Farooqui. Both of them were arrested in November 2017. The case was first registered in Kolkata by the Special Task Force (STF) on 21 November. ABT is a banned terrorist organization in Bangladesh. The case relates to the arrest of five ABT members in Kolkata.

Four of the arrested ABT members are Bangladeshi nationals while one is an Indian. The NIA took up the matter on March 1, 2018. NIA investigation revealed that these Bangladeshi members of ABT had entered the country in 2016 to carry out a conspiracy of terrorist activities in India. These terrorists stayed in Hyderabad, Pune, and Mumbai. A trial is going on against the three other arrested members.
